Oregon Dune Mushers
Hello from the Oregon Dune Mushers (ODM)!!
As many of you know, ODM held the last actual Mail Run in 2005. For 28 consecutive years, many mushers, handlers, members, fiends and family members enjoyed participating in this event. Then, problems obtaining the permit from the Forest Service, because of a clause in the insurance certificate, brought the Mail Run to a halt. After that, enjoyable Fun Runs have been a yearly event for a few veteran and new mushers.
After years of ongoing discussions at meetings, it has been decided to dissolve the organization. Fun Runs will still be held, just not as a club. The main concerns are the funds in the treasury, lack of interest in holding meetings and leadership with the dwindling membership. Periodically, donations have been made to dog related organizations or businesses. And as far as meetings go, we can always have get togethers since we do enjoy our friendships and the social part of the group.
To end the club designation, a big celebration is planned, inviting all involved in the Mail Run and the club, over the history of the event. The date for this is Dec 3rd 2016 in Winchester Bay at Bedrocks. A flyer is here, listing all the information needed for the event. Please RSVP to Dina.
The Fun Run has been held on the first weekend of December the last few years, and it will again be held in conjunction with this celebration. Teams will run Sat. & Sun. mornings, leaving Sat. evening open for the get-together. A flyer for the Fun Run is here.
Please spread the word about this celebration. We do not have contact information for many and would like to notify as many as possible about this chance to renew old friendships and share memories of the past with stories, photos, videos, etc. Or, notify Cari Hinesly (email@example.com or 541-890-2113) with contact information. Thank you!!
Chemult Sled Dog Races CANCELLED
The board has met and decided that we will not be having the races this year. There are many factors involved in this decision, the biggest being the lack of man power to pull it off. We decided to bench it for this year and we will be looking for people interested in taking the races on into the future. If we cannot find anyone we will decide whether to dissolve the club at that time. Myself and Missy will be resigning our positions on the board and Ray will be moving next year, so he would only be available to help with this year.
This is bitter sweet for myself as I have really enjoyed my 10 years with the races but I have grown weary of doing so much with so little.
Please feel free to give my number to people who may be interested in taking over the Chemult Sled Dog Races. I will be available as a technical advisor for a new board and would be willing to serve in the role of registration but I no longer want the responsibility of the President. Hey I would even take a turn in the food wagon J I started there and really enjoyed it!!
Thanks again for everything,
Erin K. Sutton

La Pine Mushing Weekend
Dates: November 14th and 15th, 2015
Where: La Pine State Park, La Pine, Oregon
This event is a dirt run, so plan on carts, quads, bikes and scooters. We will be hoping for damp trails, cool temps, but no snow. Runs will be arranged to provide a variety of distances and training opportunities, including passing (from behind and head on), team weaving, directional command training, hills, etc. There is quite a variety of nice dirt trails to choose from. The event is open to anyone regardless of mushing style and experience (or lack thereof); bikejoring and scootering teams are welcome. Trails are suitable for all functions unless we get a surprise dump of snow that makes them dangerous for bikes or scooters, in which case we will combine efforts to make sure everyone gets to run their dogs.
Organized runs will be on Saturday, Sunday & Monday mornings; meet for breakfast at the conference lodge at 6:30 am or at the meadow about 7:30. (This is subject to change, without notice, if the weather looks to be on the warm side.) The staging area is in the big meadow about 1/8th mile before South Loop of the campground.
The event has the use of the meeting hall over the weekend. It has a refrigerator/freezer, microwave, extra electrical outlets, sink with hot/cold running water, tables and a heater. We will have a potluck meal on Saturday and Sunday afternoons at about 3 pm; other meals will be informal potluck at the participants’ discretion…. We never lack for enough good food!
11/8-10/2013 annual "La Pine Mushing Weekend" in La Pine, OR. I apologize that this is the first official announcement of the event on the lists, when usually I start putting word out in April....... Many of you who are "repeat offenders" have already made your plans and reservations.... for those of you who haven't, come join us and be prepared for a fun-filled, dog running, story swapping weekend! There is no "fee" for the event but there will be a small "chip in" for the meeting hall costs.
The official event is on Saturday, Nov 9th, and Sunday, Nov 10th . Many of us will be arriving on Friday, the 8th, to get set up and ready for a fun-filled weekend. Since that Monday is the Veteran’s Day holiday, a lot of us will stay and run dogs on Monday morning before heading home.
Remember to manage your dogs so that they are reasonably quiet while in camp and also remember to fill in holes and pick up poop or straw in your campsite; we want to remain welcome guests!
See the announcement and details on the “upcoming” page on my website -
In this day-long workshop, you and your dog will be introduced to training methods to prepare for dog-powered sports like scootering, carting, skijoring, and dog-sledding. The morning will be spent on one-on-one training including pulling, learning commands, passing other dogs, and dealing with distractions. At lunch, we will have presentations on training and dog care. After lunch, you and your dog will have a chance to try out dog-scootering. We will provide harnesses and other needed equipment including dog scooters. We will provide coffee and pastry in the morning. Lunch will also be provided. This event will be held rain or shine, so dress accordingly. We are looking forward to meeting you and your dog!
